Meet Annette Draughn

Hello! I’m Annette Draughn, author of It Is Good for My Bones. After nearly 30 years as a National Board-Certified K–6 teacher—most of that time spent in Kindergarten and First Grade—I discovered just how powerful stories can be in shaping a child’s confidence, curiosity, and love for reading. That passion continues to guide my writing today.

I live in rural North Carolina with my husband, Winford. I’m a proud mother to my two daughters, Sheena and Shana, and “Grandma” to five wonderful grandchildren who inspire me every day. Sharing stories with them—and hearing their ideas about characters and adventures—has become one of my greatest joys and a special part of my creative process.

The stories I write are meant to feel like gentle conversations—ones that remind children (and the grown-ups who read with them) that they are capable, valued, and stronger than they sometimes believe. Along the way, my hope is to open the door to meaningful moments—whether that’s building confidence, choosing kindness, or simply seeing others with a little more understanding. Without saying it outright, my stories invite readers to think about how their words and actions affect others, encouraging a world with less judgment and more compassion.

If my books can spark a smile, start a conversation, or stay in a child’s heart long after the last page is turned, then I know I’ve done what I set out to do.

I am looking forward to hearing from my readers. You may contact me by email: adraughn560@gmail.com

Meet the Illustrator

Hi, I’m Riley Draughn, a 2023 graduate of Elkin High School and the proud granddaughter of Annette Draughn. I created this book to inspire kids who may feel lost or out of place — to remind them that they can be anything, big or small. This project is close to my heart, and I’ve loved every moment of bringing it to life. As an artist, I’m still discovering my style, and this book is part of that journey.
